Small Business Week: Virginia

May 5, 2023

Established as a family business since its beginnings in 1919 in West Virginia, Tri-County Furniture continues to demonstrate its commitment to home-town quality and service today. Currently, the fourth generation of the K.M. Walker family operates the store located in Covington, VA, including Wes and Susan Walker and Lisa & Joey Jennings.

The Covington, Virginia location opened its doors in 1987 on Maple Avenue in the former Richardson-Vail building. They built and moved to their current location on Maple Ave., the largest of the three stores, offering 44,000 square feet of furniture, appliances, bedding and flooring.

The Walker/Jennings family house all of their business checking and merchant accounts at Peoples Bank. “Throughout the years, Peoples Bank has provided funding that has helped us expand and maintain our inventory, and provide new and exciting products that we are able to offer to customers,” Owner Susan Walker said.

All of the employees at our local branch feel like friends and are always available to help with any questions or needs that we may have,” Walker said. “Branch Manager Afton Griffin has been especially helpful to us through various transitions, and it is always a pleasure to be greeted with a smile from Universal Banker Tina Morris when I go through the drive-through daily.”

Several new employees have been added over the years, expanding delivery service, and increasing warehouse operations and space by 5000 sq. ft. Tri-County is currently the largest furniture store in the Alleghany Highlands. “Peoples Bank was instrumental in allowing us to purchase a new building that houses our expanding warehouse inventory and discount store that operates two days per week,” Walker said.

In the large-chain environment of today, Tri-County Furniture takes pride in their roots of family-run values and personal, friendly customer service. Tri-County remains committed to the Alleghany Highlands and looks forward to serving the community for many years to come.
